The Jute fiber comes from the stem and ribbon of the jute plant. Jute plants are rain –fed crop with little need for fertilizer or pesticides in contrast to cotton’s heavy requirements. Production is concentrated mostly in Bangladesh. Making twine rope and matting are among its uses. Jute is in great demand due to its cheapness, softness, length, luster and uniformity of its fiber. It is called the brown paper bag as it is also the most used product in gunny sacks to store rice, wheat, grains etc. Jute coffee bags are perhaps the most famous product, known as hessian or burlap. Nearly 75% of jute goods are used as packing materials, burlap, gunny cloth, hessian and sacks. Carpet backing cloth also favorite. As plastic is banned for consumer bagging, Jute bags are now taking a greater share of the market. Jute fiber is 100% bio-degradable and recyclable and thus eco friendly.
